A personalised pathway for students in Years 9 to 12
At Five Islands Secondary College, we proudly offer the Big Picture Program – an innovative and personalised approach to learning that helps students discover their passions and achieve their goals in a way that works best for them.
What is the Big Picture Program?
Big Picture is a unique learning pathway for students who are looking for something different from traditional schooling. It’s designed around each individual student – their interests, strengths, and future aspirations.
Students follow a Personalised Learning Plan and work closely with teachers/advisors, mentors, and real-world professionals to develop practical skills, knowledge, and experience in areas they are interested in.
Who is it for?
Big Picture is ideal for students in Years 9 to 12 who:
- Want to explore their personal interests as part of their schoolwork
- Are looking for more flexible, hands-on learning
- Learn best through real-world experience
- May not feel engaged in a traditional classroom setting
- Are aiming for university, TAFE, employment or starting a trade
Whether a student is creative, academic, hands-on, entrepreneurial or just looking for a different way to learn – Big Picture supports a wide range of goals and learning styles
How does it work?
Students in Big Picture:
-
Work on individual projects based on their passions
-
Complete internships or mentorships in the real world
-
Build a Year 12 Graduation Portfolio, which includes:
- A major research project
- Real-world learning experiences
- Reflections and personal growth stories
- Evidence of skills and achievements
This portfolio can also be used for university entry, especially through the Big Picture Education Australia university network.
What makes Big Picture different?
- One student at a time: every student has a personalised learning plan
- Real-world learning: students learn through experience, not just textbooks
- Mentoring: students work with adult mentors in fields they’re passionate about
- Flexible pathways: leads to further study, apprenticeships, or direct employment
- Supportive community: students are part of a close-knit advisory group
Will students still get their HSC?
Students in the Big Picture Program can still meet the requirements for:
- The Record of School Achievement (RoSA)
- The Higher School Certificate (HSC)
We support students in choosing the right mix of learning experiences and academic subjects to suit their chosen path.
International Big Picture Learning Credential
Students completing year 12 requirements will obtain an international recognised qualification.
