FISC Support Dogs
At Five Islands Secondary College, we understand that student wellbeing is essential to learning. That’s why our trained education support dogs, Walnut and Daisy, are a valued part of our school community.
And it’s not just a feel-good idea — research clearly shows that school dogs help students thrive in a number of ways:
What the Research Says
- Reduces stress and anxiety
Studies show that the presence of a calm, friendly dog can help students feel safer and more relaxed, especially during high-pressure times like exams or transitions. - Improves emotional wellbeing
Regular interaction with school dogs has been linked to better mood, increased confidence, and reduced feelings of loneliness. - Builds social and communication skills
Dogs naturally help students connect — encouraging kindness, empathy, and positive relationships with others. - Boosts engagement and motivation
Students are often more focused, enthusiastic and ready to participate when dogs are part of the learning environment. - Supports better attendance and behaviour
Having a dog at school can make students feel more comfortable coming to class, and can even help reduce disruptive behaviours.
Our school dogs are more than just friendly faces — they help us create a safe, inclusive space where student wellbeing and learning go hand in hand.
Meet Walnut
Walnut is a gentle and friendly Golden Labrador who plays a special role in the life of our school.
You’ll often find him relaxing in the Art Room with his trainer and owner, Tess, bringing a calm and comforting presence to the space. Walnut loves being around students and is always happy to offer quiet companionship.
As a working education support dog, Walnut stays at his best when those around him are calm and respectful. To help him do his job, we kindly ask that students:
- Approach him gently and respectfully
- Avoid sudden movements like lunging or running toward him
- Keep voices low and remain calm when near him
By following these simple guidelines, we help Walnut stay relaxed, focused, and ready to support the wellbeing of our school community.
Thank you for showing care and kindness to Walnut — just as he shows to all of us.
Meet Daisy
Daisy is a sweet and affectionate Shih Tzu who brings a lot of joy and comfort to our school community.
She spends her time with her owner and trainer, Liza, and loves connecting with students in a calm and friendly way. Daisy may be small in size, but she has a big impact — helping students feel safe, supported, and at ease throughout the day.
As with all support dogs, Daisy does her best work when she’s in a calm and respectful environment. To help her feel comfortable, we encourage students to:
- Approach Daisy slowly and gently
- Avoid loud noises or sudden movements
- Give her space when she’s resting or working
Daisy is a much-loved part of our wellbeing team, and we’re so lucky to have her at Five Islands Secondary College.
